What is Page Rank ?

Page rank was the first way Google used to order pages in their search engine, as I’m sure you know Google was founded by two students from Stamford university called Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

The way the system used to work was based on the way university papers were cited. As the two students were attending Stamford University, they used what they already knew to create Google. For example if you wrote a paper on a particular subject it wouldn’t mean much as you don’t have any recognition as an expert in that subject. But if a couple of professors cited your paper, or in other words said that you information was of good quality, your paper would gain more weight as experts in the field agree with your paper.

The same principal applies with the Google search engine, each page of a website is given a Page Rank from 0 – 10, ten being the best. To gain Page Rank you need to get a vote from other webpage’s saying your webpage is good content. The way you get a vote for your webpage is by another site linking to you, which is called a backlinks. There are two types of backlinks, one way links and reciprocal links.

  • One way links - happens when a site links to you and you don’t link back.
  • Reciprocal links - when you both link to each other.

One way links are better than reciprocal links but we don’t know why and we don’t know how much better, because Google’s algorithms are closely guarded secrets, more secret than Colonel’s Sanders chicken recipe.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a reactive science, you tweak the site and see what happens to your rankings, over time you can isolate positive and negative affects within the algorithm.

So the best way to generate Page Rank is by getting as many votes (backlinks) to your pages.

How Page Rank Is Distributed

If a webpage has a Page Rank of 5, and there are 10 out bound links (OBL) on that page, you would get a 10th of a page rank 5, or 0.5 of a Page Rank.

When we found this out it became very easy to manipulate Page Rank to appear top of Google and get a tonne of traffic and sales. Google being Google didn’t let this go on for long and introduced the algorithm in place today. Since the implementation of the Google algorithm it has been updated many times and Page Rank is not as important as it used to be, but still one of the main factors of organic positioning.

In recent times Google have been paying more attention to text in the link that goes back to your site which is called anchor text. Usually sites will link to you saying “for the best way to make money on the internet visit http://www.traffic-genie.com” and the website address would be a clickable link. A Much Better way to link back to your site would be, instead of making the URL the link, make the keyword the link, for example “for the best way to make money on the internet visit my site”.

So now when the Google spider visits your site from this link, it distributes Page Rank to your webpage and it also now knows your site is about what’s in the anchor text. I can’t stress how much importance is placed on anchor text for organic rankings.

If you were to do a search in Google for the keyword “click here” the first or second result will be Adobe. The reason why Adobe ranks highly for the keyword “click here” is because every person who makes PDF’s available online, needs to let the user know they need the Adobe reader to view this PDF, which you can download for FREE if you click here. You can imagine how many one way links Adobe have anchored with the text click here for their FREE Adobe reader, so although Adobe haven’t optimised for the keyword “click here” they rank purely on the strength of the backlinks.

3 Way Links

The system uses a method of linking known as 3-way linking. Unlike the traditional one-way link, where only one site benefits, with a 3-way link all 3 sites get what Google sees as a one-way link to their web site.

In the old reciprocal link method, site A linked to site B and site B linked back to site A. Google does not value that kind of link very much at all anymore. Google wants to see one-way links (or at least what it believes are one-way links).

In a 3-way link setup, site A links to site B, site B links to site C, and site C links to site A (as shown in the graphic above). This is where the power of this system lies.

Google sees each link in the 3-way link exchange as a one-way link
and gives it the FULL ranking value of a one-way link.

Go take a look at 3 way linking today and see how it can help your site.
