Founded in the mid nineties, both Google and Yahoo have become famous companies in their own right over the past 15 years. Produced from research projects at Stanford University in California, they truly exemplify the ability of these “Dot Com” companies to move out of the lab and become major corporations in the world of commerce. Although you have nothing to do with the Internet Business, most people who have a pc or a laptop, will have used Yahoo or Google now and again. Although founded a couple of years behind Yahoo, it is Google which has become the leading Search Engine today. This is probably due to differing guiding principles as the companies evolved in the late nineties and early noughties. As more folks used pc’s to Work From Home or were transferred more and more items using Search Engines. At that point in time Yahoo was the dominant force, but there was robust competition from the likes of Alta Vista, Excite and MSN. Today it is Google who looks like winning the battle for Search Engine superiority. This is probably down to two reasons.

To start with, there was a fundamental difference in Google’s Search Engine from most of the others then. It was in the way they ranked the result of searches for a certain item. Typical Search Engines akin to Yahoo, ranked search results by the sum total of times the search term surfaced on the Page. Google’s founders reasoned there was a better process. They were confident that the correlation between the websites, and the quantity of pages that connected back to the initial website, were key factors that could be significance of a website. Over time this has been demonstrated to be true. If you own an Internet Business, you will almost certainly have had your web site optimised to relate to Google’s Search Engine.

Afterwards, Yahoo’s founders endeavoured to diversify the company and changed it into a Web Portal in the late nineties. They set more emphasis on expanding the range of services to online consumers. So items like Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo 360 (a blogging site) were added to the initial search engine offering. Both corporations derive most of their income from advertising but due to Google’s “Pay per Click” and their sponsored links to their customers’ Internet Business, they have dominated over Yahoo as a Search Engine company. Yahoo is probably a more rounded company, attractive to people who had Online Jobs or who opted to Work From Home. People need a social website to communicate and discuss a range of topics amongst each other. They also need a hot mail account, so they can e-mail each other from anywhere. Yahoo concentrated on the Search Engine business, and although it bought You Tube in 2007, and launchedintroduced Google Earth in 2005, that is what it is best known for.

After the Dot-Com bubble burst in September 2001, numerous internet companies and thousands of Online Jobs ceased to exist. Share prices plummeted and market capitalisation went south with bath water too. Today when you evaluate the two companies, Google’s Market capitalization compares with the likes of IBM, Apple and Microsoft. Yahoo’s market capitalisation is now a factor of 10 lower than these three companies. It now looks as if Microsoft will without a doubt have access to Yahoo’s Search Engine and utilise it in conjunction with its own offering, called Bing.

Hence for the moment Google is the victor. If you use the internet in an office, or if you Work From Home, it is possible that you will find what you are seeking, by searching on Google. In the meantime the Chinese are coming. Look out for Baidu in the near future!!
